Chapter Eleven

“Bear?” Sariah asked. “What’s wrong, boy?” She took the dog’s head in her hands and held it. The poor animal was shivering and coated in a fine layer of sweat. The beast was panting like crazy. He’d obviously been running pretty hard before he showed up.

“It’s Harvey, Sariah. Bear came back here a moment ago, but Harvey wasn’t with him.”

The sinking feeling came back. Her eyes grew wide in shock. “What do you mean? Surely Bear wouldn’t have left him somewhere unless…”

“Unless he had no other choice,” Gabe finished for her.

In one swift motion, Sariah shot up and headed for the door. She threw it open without a second thought and went out into the night. Bear followed.

“Wait!” Gabriel cried out, running after her. “The city streets aren’t safe at night!”

Sariah was halfway down the alley but she stopped and turned to look at Gabe, still by the doorway. “And?” she demanded, hands on her hips in a defiant pose.

Gabe scoffed, incredulous. “And what? You can’t go out by yourself! You’ll just get yourself in trouble, too!”

She looked him up and down. “Are you saying a simple city is too dangerous for the likes of you?”

His head reared back, and he waved his hands in denial. “I didn’t say that.” His eyes got a strange look in them. “Hey! Who said I was going with you, anyway?”

Sariah scowled. “You did, remember? When you promised to come with me on this quest in the first place.” She crouched down and rubbed the top of Bear’s head. The dog hadn’t left her side and he accepted the attention happily. “Besides, I have Bear with me. He’ll keep me safe if you’re not man enough to do it.”

“Like he kept Harvey safe?”

Bear growled at Gabe’s words and flashed his fangs at him.

“Ooh, he did not like that one bit. Neither did I. I’m sure Bear did everything he could, didn’t you boy?” Sariah fired back. She rubbed the dog’s snout and scratched him behind one of his ears. Bear always seemed to like it. “At least he’s not sitting there hesitating while our friend is in trouble.”

Gabe opened his mouth to argue further but shut it. He knew when he was outnumbered. With a heavy sigh and his head bowed, he walked to Sariah and Bear.

“Lead the way, Bear.”

Bear let out three sharp barks and ran off into the night. Sariah and Gabe followed closely on his heels.

The three made their way in the semi-darkness, meeting no resistance. It seemed no one but city guards were out and about at this hour.

Sariah let her thoughts take a darker turn. Maybe Gabe was right. If none of the city denizens were out save for the guardsmen, maybe it really was dangerous after dark.

She couldn’t let herself get wrapped in thoughts like that. Harvey was in trouble. Every instinct in her body told her she needed to find him, and that came first, even before her own quest.

What kind of person would she be
